Learning to say "NO" may be the most important lesson
any caregiver will ever learn. No matter how dedicated a family
member is there are limitations on how much they are physically,
emotionally and financially capable of doing.

 |
It is essential for every caregiver to become an
educated consumer. Find out what resources are available in the
community, what services the care recipient might be eligible for and
who to call for assistance.
|
 |
Caregivers should focus on their own needs as well as
the needs of their family member. This is not an act of
selfishness but one of necessity. Caregivers who take care of
themselves find it much easier to balance all their responsibilities.
|
 |
Create a supportive environment. Find a friend,
family member or professional to talk with when feeling overwhelmed,
depressed or sad. Find an outlet to release the emotions that
naturally develop in the caregiver role.
|
 |
Don't get caught up in self-doubt, self-criticism or
guilt. Do the best you can and no one including yourself should
expect more. Caregivers are often far too hard on themselves.
|
 |
Schedule time to take a break from the demands of
caring for your family member. Get away from the environment
even if it is for only a few hours. |
