Volunteer Opportunities

DRIVERS ~ “Drive People Happy” by transporting them to medical appointments. Drivers receive additional liability insurance to expand individual insurance coverage and mileage reimbursement. Flexible schedule, orientation and support provided.

ELDER SERVICE CORP VOLUNTEERS ~ Senior volunteers provide companionship for isolated elders at home and in nursing homes. Hold clerical positions in non-profit agencies. Stipend and mileage reimbursement. Commitment:18 hrs/wk

FOOD SHOPPERS ~ Add an elder’s shopping list to yours when grocery shopping. Details are worked out between shopper and elder.

HEALTH BENEFITS COUNSELORS ~ Provide older adults with accurate information on Medicare A and B, medigap supplement insurance, filing claims and long term care insurance. Volunteers receive 35 hours of initial training, on-going in-services and certification. Commitment: 35 hours training and 2-4 hrs/wk for counseling and training. 

MONEY MANAGERS ~ Help older adults with basic money management, like balancing a checkbook, budgeting and routine bill paying.  Commitment: 4 hrs/mo

FRIENDS IN DEED ~ Provide support to homeless and near homeless elders.  Activities include driving elders to medical appointments, companionship or other appointments that would transition this elder to a permanent housing situation. 

NURSING HOME OMBUDSMAN ~ Trained volunteers visit nursing homes on a weekly basis to help resolve issues among residents and staff.  Commitment: Initial 3 day training; 4 hr./mo training; 2 - 4 hrs/wk for visits; and a one year commitment. 

COMPUTER INSTRUCTORS FOR SENIORNET ~ Provide computer instruction for adults age 55 and older in a computer training center.  Familiarity with IBM compatible systems and basic word processing is required. Commitment: 2-4 hrs/wkly

SPECIAL PROJECTS ~Volunteers may serve as part of a one time project or continue on an on-going basis. Special Events:  Walk/Run for Elders; Lottery; Gift Program or clerical work. Commitment: flexibility.
