Alzheimer's Disease Affects the Entire
Family
Alzheimer’s Disease is a progressive, degenerative
disease of the brain, which results in memory loss, impaired
thinking and personality changes.
Elder Services participates in the Merrimack
Valley Alzheimer’s Partnership. Members plan the only
Alzheimer’s Conference in our area (north of Boston) for professional,
paraprofessional, and family caregivers. The conference
is held every spring.

Councils
on Aging
- Every
city and town is required by law to have a Council on Aging
(COA)
- The
purpose of each COA is to service older adults by planning
& monitoring services to elder residents in each town.
- Services
include: outreach activities, meals, recreational activities,
transportation, health clinics, exercise programs and volunteer
opportunities

Crisis
Intervention
- Crisis
Intervention staff respond to your call reporting abuse
or neglect of elders ~ confidentially
- Abuse
can include; physical, sexual, caregiving issues, and financial
exploitation
- Elders
at Risk – helping individuals who are not victims of abuse
but whose independent living is putting them in danger
- Intervention
to keep elders healthy and safe in their own homes

Escorted
Transportation
- Volunteer drivers transport elders to medical appointments.
- Voluntary donations are requested for drivers as reimbursement
for mileage.
- New drivers are always in need ~ if you are interested,

Benefits Counseling
- Free and confidential guidance understanding health insurance
and health benefit programs
- Shine counselors are certified in Medicare services,
Medicaid and other private insurance options

- Health
Promotion Clinics are offered at various locations throughout
Merrimack Valley
- Serving
adults over 60
- Testing
for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, osteoporosis
- Some
provide flu and pneumonia vaccinations, oral health check
ups

Homelessness
and Emergency Shelters
- The
Crisis Intervention Unit (CIU) at Elder Services are experienced
in working with resistant and at risk older adults
- CIU
staff determine the most appropriate emergency placement
- Ultimately
permanent housing options and supportive services will be
located

Legal
Assistance
The Elder Law Unit, a division of Merrimack Valley Legal Services,
Inc., provides free legal services for residents aged 60 and
over.
Assistance with:
- Social Security and public benefits including denials,
terminations or reductions
- Housing and landlord-tenant disputes
- Health care & nursing home disputes
- Utility shut-offs, domestic abuse, guardianships and conservatorship

Mental
Health Counseling Services
- Depression,
dementia or other mental health conditions are not normal
signs of aging. Changes in mental or emotional status should
not be ignored.

Money
Management Program
Household budgets, checkbook balancing and bill paying can
become difficult due to poor eyesight, deteriorating health,
mobility limitations or depression.
- Volunteers assist low-income older adults with the tasks
involved with routine bill paying, budgeting and check writing.
- The Money Management Program is jointly sponsored by
AARP and the Massachusetts Office of Elder Affairs.

Nursing
Home Ombudsman Program
Ombudsman - a Swedish Word for Advocate
- Volunteer Ombudsman
provide support and advocate for the needs of residents
in long-term care facilities.
- Ombudsman visit
and talk privately with residents confidentially and on
a regular basis.
- Ombudsman are trained
and certified by the state of Massachusetts and investigate
complaints about quality of life and patient care and attempt
resolution through advocacy and negotiation.
- Provide assistance
in selecting a nursing home that best meets an individual’s
needs.

Nursing
Home Screenings
- When
community services and family support are no longer enough
and nursing home placement appears to be the only option.
- Nursing
homes have the ability to provide 24-hour skilled medical
care and supervision that cannot be provided at home.
- Elder
Services Nurses screen all Mass Health recipients (over
the age of 21) seeking admission to a skilled long-term
care facility.

Nutrition
Services
- Generally provided
at Congregate Meal Sites located at Senior Centers or other
public
facilities through Meals on Wheels Programs for homebound
elders.
- Home Delivered Meals
program offers a nutritious meal and daily check in to reduce
isolation and monitor elders’ well being.
- Congregate meal
sites combine a nutritious lunch with conversation and activity.

Prescription
Drug Assistance
Help With the High Cost of Medications
- Massachusetts residents
age 65 and older
- Disabled individuals
under age 65 who work less that 40 hours a month
- Co-payments, monthly
premiums and annual deductibles are based on each member’s
household income.

Senior
Aide Program
- Part time employment
opportunities for financially eligible adults 55 and older.
- Supplement your
income while providing a valuable service to your community.

SeniorNet

- SeniorNet provides
adults with the opportunity to learn about personal computers
- Elder Services was
selected to manage a SeniorNet
Learning Center for individuals, age fifty and older,
living in the Merrimack Valley area.
- The courses offered
include basics on word processing, spreadsheets, graphics
and the Internet.
- Instructors, volunteering
2-4 hours weekly, are recruited for their technological
skills, professional background and enthusiasm for the program.
- Membership fees,
Learning Center fees and the generosity of corporate donations
enable continued expansion of the program.

Volunteer
Opportunities
You can
make a difference in someone’s life. It may surprise you how
much you have to offer with very little effort.
- Retirees, students,
professionals or a stay-at-home parents with a few hours
to spare
- Opportunities to
assist older adults with grocery shopping, transportation,
companionship, money management, health benefits counseling,
nursing home advocacy or computer instruction.
- All volunteers are
required to consent to a CORI check, provide references
and a personal interview. We adhere to a careful screening
process before matching volunteers with older adults.
